This time visiting the beach at Allonby there seemed to be so many more shells than before, mainly these oysters, 153 of which I sorted into three size groups indoors and took out onto the sand. I had already drawn a sketch of what I hoped might happen and this time the finished piece resembled it closely. It took me three hours to make on a blustery winters day with detectorists working nearby. Interesting how strongly the residual feeling of the gritty sand on my fingers lingered for some days, triggered each time by looking at the images. And remarkable that when I went down to the beach later I saw the first wave to consume the piece in a froth of bubbling foam! I was aiming to produce something with a mechanised feel to it by using only natural resources.
